Sustainable Solutions

Unit Reflection

1. How does what you learned during this unit connect to the real world? What was the significant take away for you?

Learning that extracting oil from the oil sands pollutes the air and “wrecks” our environment isn’t just something that Miss. H made up. This is something that is happening in the real world and we need different solutions to stop these problems and use environmentally friendly renewable sources. I learned that we will, at one point in time, of oil because it’s not a renewable resource. For oil to be made, dead plants, animals, and other living things are squished under land after being decomposed. After millions of years, the once-living things morph into fossil fuels. The reason we are running out of oil is because it takes millions of years to create the fossil fuels. If we continue consuming oil at the current pace, we will eventually run out.

2. How did you develop or grow as a student through this unit? (What skills did you use/improve? What new things did you learn? Has your perspective changed at all?)

I used thinking skills a lot to think of sustainable solutions (summative task). I also practiced asking good questions to the presenters, so I could learn more about how I could live sustainably.  I made mind maps related to natural resources. I used communication skills when I talked to my parents about how they live sustainably or asking questions and receiving detailed answers from the speakers.

3. As you look through the work you have completed throughout this unit, what are your strengths?

I found that my strengths are understanding how fossil fuels are made, how to live sustainably, examples of sustainable solutions, and innovating a sustainable solution. I am also good at listening to the speaker’s presentations because I found them quite interesting.

4. As you look through the work you have completed throughout this unit, what could you improve?

I think I could work on knowing more about how oil is extracted and what tools are needed for the extraction process. I also thought that I could work on knowing the different extracting techniques.

5. Choose a piece of work from this unit that you are proud of / would like to showcase. Copy and paste it below (or provide a link). Why did you choose this piece?

I was proud of the summative task “Making a Sustainable Solution” because of the solution I came up with.
